Before there was Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff recorded under the name Milk, releasing at least one tape (called Pygmie Barn in E Minor). In the early 90's, NMH began as a project for Mangum, and he released several demos including Invent Yourself a Shortcake and Hype City Soundtrack. In 1994, NMH released a 7" record called Everything Is, featuring Mangum and it seems whomever else he could rope into playing with him.
In 1996, Merge Records released their first album, On Avery Island, a more (coherent) cohesive-sounding album featuring fellow indie artists like Robert Schneider, Rick Benjamin, and Lisa Janssen. In 1998, they followed up with the knock-out In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, an album conceptually based on the story of Anne Frank and other tragedies. Critics loved the album, though initially public response wasn't terribly impressive (since then, however, NMH has become something of a staple of Indie influence). Shortly after, the band abruptly went on indefinite hiatus.
It's fairly certain that there will be no more NMH, though members still work with each other on other projects. Since the hiatus, Orange Twin re-released Everything Is, as well as Live at Jittery Joe's. Plans were once made for a NMH rarities album, but it was quashed in 2005, apparently by Mangum himself.
